Course OverviewCWCS’s Math 6 online course offers students the opportunity to study at home while employing technology as a learning tool, meeting with other students in a virtual classroom, and receiving live instruction from a teacher.

Students should expect to spend time each day completing an assigned lesson. Much of the learning is done independently by the student with the guidance of parental instruction, as the class meets only once per week.  Many students find it helpful to have a personal tutor, or take advantage of drop-in tutoring at the learning centers, to assist with homework questions. Students will be doing the majority of their work online at my.hrw.com.  In addition to the assignments, there are videos and practice opportunities for each lesson.

The class meets twice per week online in Canvas using the Big Blue Button. The link can be found in Canvas.  Even though the class meets only twice each week, completion of daily assignments will be expected.  Math 6 is a rigorous course intended to prepare students for middle school math.  Each class period will focus on questions regarding the previous assignments, instruction of new topics, activities involving mathematical reasoning, assessments, problem solving, and investigations or group work. This gives the instructor an opportunity to identify strengths and weaknesses of the students, and identify concepts that need more instruction. Students will take a short quiz and will receive weekly participation points for attending class, having a working microphone, and actively participating in class.  Attendance is required. If an absence is necessary, the student should notify the instructor in advance.

Prerequisites:  Successful completion of Math 5.

Curriculum:  Required curriculum may be available at the Learning Center on a first come basis.  If needed, ESs can order curriculum using the OPS catalog which will have the most up-to-date pricing. Students will need:

  • Go Math 6! Student Edition Workbook
  • Go Math 6! Practice and Skills Fluency Workbook
  • Go Math 6! California Solution Key
  • Go Math 6! Teacher Edition for Primary Home Educator

Materials:

  • Working external headset with mic (computer speakers do not work successfully with the Canvas setup). Plug-in headsets (rather than Bluetooth) work best with Jigsaw. After the third week of class and no headset, students may begin to lose participation points for the class. Class is much more engaging if all students can talk in class using their mic. Suggested:  Office Depot Logitech Clear-Chat
  • Pencils & Erasers
  • Composition Notebook
  • Low Odor Dry Erase Markers
  • Whiteboard (for in-class whiteboard practice)

Attendance & Participation (25%):

Attendance is required.  The Truancy Policy applies to Canvas courses. An unexcused absence may be counted as a truancy.

  • Excused Absence is defined as:
The parent shall notify the teacher by phone of the absence at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.
  • Unexcused Absence is defined as:
An absence that does not accompany a parent phone call to the instructor at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.

*If there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow for at least 24 hours, then the teacher must still be notified prior to the start of class; allowances may be made depending on the circumstances. Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident, sudden illness, etc. Students should arrange a "back up plan" in case of unexpected computer problems the day of the class (i.e. make pre-arrangements to go to a neighbor, friend, relative, library, etc.)

When students are absent, they must contact the instructor via email or contact another classmate to obtain the homework assignment.

Absent/Late Work: All students are expected to email their instructor notifying them that their late work has been submitted and is ready for grading.

Daily Homework (25%)

  • The ES does need to submit a Quarterly Progress Report.
  • This grade reflects the daily homework and learning activities that the student is completing according to the assignments posted on Canvas.
  • Homework activities include assignments on my.hrw.com, class discussions, and other instructional activities posted on Canvas or given in live class sessions.
  • Before taking the online class, students are expected to have completed the Explore Activity for the lesson they will take during the week. The Explore Activity will not be covered during class time, unless there are questions by the students.

Weekly Quizzes & Module Tests (50%):

The instructor will collect several formal assessments throughout the semester.  There will be a pretest/practice test before each formal module assessment. Though these are optional, they will best prepare the students for the actual assessments that will be calculated into their semester grades. Specific instructions for the Module, Unit, Midterm, and Final Exam tests will be given in class, including procedures for submission in Canvas, and due dates. Tests will not be accepted once the subsequent test is posted. Due dates and cut-off dates will be posted for each test on the Canvas assignment page.  Weekly quizzes will be given to check for student’s understanding of the current material. Module Quizzes will be given at the end of each Module.  The quizzes are taken in Canvas.  Specific instructions for the quizzes and tests will be given in class, including procedures for submission and due dates.  Due dates will be posted for each test on the Canvas assignment page.  Late submissions will not be accepted without a request for extension BEFORE the due date.
