Prerequisite: Arabic 1

Grading: 5 credits

 

Attendance

The Effective Educator meets with each student at least five times during the semester. During these meetings, the educator answers questions about the curriculum, explains assignments, and provides feedback on student work. Students are expected to complete all assignments given by the Effective Educator.

EE/Parental Support: You are signing up your student for a college preparatory course. UC guidelines stipulate that students receive at least one hour per week per a-g course engaged in interactive instruction and /or academic tutoring/advising. The parents or Effective Educator will be providing this for the student. If one is not available please sign up with one of our tutors.

 

On-Camera Expectation

 All students are required to be on camera during the meetings. Students are only visible to their instructor and do not appear on the meeting recording.

Parental Support

Your child will meet with the instructor once a week.  Your child may need some support from you at home with their reading. Please use this pacing guide to help your child complete the assignments each week. We are a team in your child’s education and your child’s success depends on all members giving 100%.

Course Overview 

The course is designed to increase vocabulary and knowledge of necessary grammar as well as speaking ability and writing in the Arabic language. Students will learn to use vocabulary, grammar, speaking ability and writing ability in the Arabic language. Students will demonstrate competency by being able to communicate orally and in writing.

Course Goals and/or Major Student Outcomes

  • Students will be able to communicate in Arabic for a variety of purposes.
  • Students will gather, analyze and apply the knowledge learned to real-life situations.
  • Students will expand their understanding of the history and cultures of the Arabic-Speaking people.
  • Students will have gathered experience and knowledge in the Arabic Language and culture. 

Course Objectives

  • Students will further their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Arabic Language.
  • Students will build vocabulary and idiomatic expressions to expand their ability to carry on a conversation in the Arabic language.
  • Students will explore the cultural aspects of the daily life of Arabic-speaking people.
  •  Students will continue to learn about Arab countries and their dialects.

Key Assignments - Unit 2

Cultural project

Students will complete at least one cultural project each quarter.

  1. A map of a city in an Arab country, or similar project.
  2. Meal Menu, recipe of a favorite dish, or similar project.
  3. The cultural life in an Arabic country – architecture, art, theatres, music, drama, sports, etc. or similar project.
  4. Attendance at a local Arabic festival, event or exhibit that includes a written presentation.

Written final

 Students will demonstrate proper grammar and usage in response to a writing prompt.

Comprehensive Oral Final:

In order to receive credit for second semester Level two, and to be recommended to Level three, all Level two foreign language students must pass an oral proficiency exam successfully. To prepare for the exam, students should practice aloud at home or with an advanced language student. The more practice the better the opportunity for success. The following list comprises the exam:

 

  •     Greetings
  •     Dates, time, weather
  •     Personal information: age, name, hometown, family
  •     Daily, leisure activities
  •     Finding housing
  •     Using public transportation
  •     driving in an Arab country
  •     Seeking medical attention
  •     Daily activities – visiting stores, theatres, events, and using transportation.

Students will demonstrate mastery throughout the course by completing the following activities:

Assessment Methods and/or Tools

 

Evaluation of student performance is based on individual abilities, interests, and talents. Methods by which student progress is assessed will be through a variety and/or combination of methods. The methods available include but are not limited to the following:

  • Monthly review of work by education specialist (credentialed teacher) • Portfolios
  •     Parent facilitator and education specialist observation
  •     Student demonstrations
