Attendance

The Effective Educator meets with each student at least five times during the semester. During these meetings, the educator answers questions about the curriculum, explains assignments, and provides feedback on student work. Students are expected to complete all assignments given by the Effective Educator.

EE/Parental Support: You are signing up your student for a college preparatory course. UC guidelines stipulate that students receive at least one hour per week per a-g course engaged in interactive instruction and /or academic tutoring/advising. The parents or Effective Educator will be providing this for the student. If one is not available please sign up with one of our tutors.

 

Course Overview: 

This course is for students taking Arabic as a foreign Language. The course is designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge of the Arabic Language and skills to communicate with Arabic-speaking people. Students will demonstrate competency by being able to communicate orally and in writing. Students will learn the Total Physical Response (TPR) method of communicating in Arabic. 

Course Goals and/or Major Student Outcomes

  • Students will be able to read and write in Arabic for a variety of purposes.
  •  Students will gather, analyze and apply the knowledge learned to real-life situations.
  •  Students will understand the history and cultures of the Arabic-Speaking people.
  •  Students will have gathered experience and knowledge in the Arabic Language and culture.

 

Course Objectives

  • Students will acquire listening, reading and writing skills in the Arabic language.
  • Students will learn the total physical response (TPR) method of communicating orally in Arabic. 
  • Students will learn the essential elements of Arabic grammar and usage.
  • Students will learn about the cultures and customs of Arabic speaking people.

Key Assignments Unit 2 

TPR (Total Physical Response) actions

Students will demonstrate mastery of four units in Total Physical Response (TPR) by showing the teacher the correct responses to his/her commands during two oral tests:

  1. Oral Test Topic – Cinema, body parts, health, numbers up to 100, consonants.
  2. Oral Test Topic – family members, buying groceries, classroom objects, figures, clothing.

Family album

Students will prepare and present an album of themselves as well as family members that includes a discussion of culture and activities.

Assessment

A-g courses require a proctored final exam or significant project each semester.

Written final

Students will identify pictures using correct grammar and usage and write a comprehensive autobiography that demonstrates appropriate use of sentence structures.

Comprehensive Oral Final:

In order to receive credit for second semester Level one, and to be recommended to Level two, all Level one foreign language students must pass an oral proficiency exam successfully. To prepare for the exam, students should practice aloud at home or with an advanced language student. The more practice the better the opportunity for success.

  • Personal information: age, name, hometown, family • Daily, leisure activities
  • Courtesy expressions
  • Numbers 1-100
  • Basic objects in home and school
  • People, physical characteristics
  • City activities – cinema, dining out, asking for information, shopping and at the train station/airport

Students will demonstrate mastery throughout the course by completing the following activities:

Evaluation of student performance is based on individual abilities, interests, and talents. Methods by which student progress is assessed will be through a variety and/or combination of methods. The methods available include but are not limited to the following:

  • Monthly review of work by education specialist (credentialed teacher) 
  • Portfolios
  • Parent facilitator and education specialist observation
  • Student demonstrations
