A Connecting Waters Charter Schools’ Reading Instructional Support Class with Parent Educator and Student

Objective:  To provide instructional coaching, modeling, and direct teaching to parent educators and students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade using a multi-sensory, research-proven reading program.

 

Overview:   In this unique class, parent educators join their students to learn best practices in teaching beginning reading skills from a credentialed teacher. The instructors will model lessons and shared reading experiences, discuss helpful instructional tips, and allow time to provide additional support for parent educators. 

 

Curriculum:   All About Reading from All About Learning Press Company. 

Parent Educators will be directed to a Placement Test to determine the level for their student; Pre Reading Level, Level 1 or Level 2. 

 

Technology Requirements:  Students must have reliable internet access and a computer device to participate in the online class.

 

Parent Educator Responsibilities:

  • Attend all classes with your student and complete the weekly homework as assigned in the Pacing Guide
  • Read the class syllabus for reference during ES meetings
  • Check out required materials from resource centers or request a Purchase Order
  • Email the instructor if your child will be absent



Student Responsibilities:

  • Attend weekly online classes or in-person classes on time
  • Complete weekly homework as assigned in the Pacing Guide 
  • Come to class prepared to participate and to learn to read

 

ES Responsibilities:

  • Sign up students for the class 
  • Check student’s work at each Learning Record meeting
  • Support the parent with any questions about Canvas; how to navigate, enter class, and locate important information on class Canvas page
  • Contact the instructor if clarification is needed regarding class required materials

 

Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Will hold class 1 day per week 
  • Model lessons in class
  • Assign weekly homework
  • Answer any questions from the student or parent educator
  • Respond within 24 hours to phone calls/emails

Course Outcomes:  Parents will learn strategies to teach their children how to read using lessons focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Students will learn these foundational skills with their parents after instructor modeling. guided by the Early Literacy Benchmarks. Parents will also learn about how to assess their child’s progress and how to support students in developing a strong foundation in early literacy.
