Prerequisites: None

Grading: 5 credits

Learning materials: Textbook, workbook, notebook, pencil, and eraser.

 

Attendance: Attendance is required.  The Truancy Policy applies to in-person and online classes. An unexcused absence may be counted as a truancy.

 

Parental Support: : Your child will meet with the instructor once a week.  Your child may need some support from you at home with their reading. Please use this pacing guide to help your child complete the assignments each week. We are a team in your child’s education and your child’s success depends on all members giving 100%.

 

Course Overview: 

This course is for students taking Arabic as a foreign Language. The course is designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge of the Arabic Language and skills to communicate with Arabic-speaking people. Students will demonstrate competency by being able to communicate orally and in writing. Students will learn the Total Physical Response (TPR) method of communicating in Arabic. 

 

Course Goals and/or Major Student Outcomes

  • Students will be able to read and write in Arabic for a variety of purposes.
  •  Students will gather, analyze and apply the knowledge learned to real-life situations.
  •  Students will understand the history and cultures of the Arabic-Speaking people.
  •  Students will have gathered experience and knowledge in the Arabic Language and culture.

Course Objectives

  • Students will acquire listening, reading and writing skills in the Arabic language.
  • Students will learn the total physical response (TPR) method of communicating orally in Arabic. 
  • Students will learn the essential elements of Arabic grammar and usage.
  • Students will learn about the cultures and customs of Arabic speaking people.

Unit 1 -  Greetings, asking for information, alphabet, diphthongs, colors, Time, dining out and weather, months and seasons, and numbers up to 50.

Key Assignments - Unit 1 

 

TPR (Total Physical Response) actions

Students will demonstrate mastery of four units in Total Physical Response (TPR) by showing the teacher the correct responses to his/her commands during four oral tests:

  1. Oral Test Topic – Greetings, asking for information, numbers up to 19, alphabet, dipthongs, colors. 
  2. Oral Test Topic –Time, dining out and weather, months and seasons, and numbers up to 50.

 

Cultural project

Students will complete at least one cultural project each quarter.

  1. Travel brochure to an Arab speaking country, or similar project.
  2. Restaurant menu, or similar project.
  3. Arabic pottery, artisans and earthenware timeline, or similar project.
  4. Attendance at a local Arabic festival, event or exhibit that includes a written presentation.

Students will demonstrate mastery throughout the course by completing the following activities:

  • Grammar and usage
  • Pronunciation practice • Vocabulary activities • Language exercises
  • Cultural notes
  • Writing practice

 

Assessment Methods and/or Tools

Evaluation of student performance is based on individual abilities, interests, and talents. Methods by which student progress is assessed will be through a variety and/or combination of methods. The methods available include but are not limited to the following:

  • Monthly review of work by education specialist (credentialed teacher) 
  • Portfolios
  • Parent facilitator and education specialist observation
  • Student demonstrations
  • Student performances
  • Student grades
