Course Overview:

CWCS’s High School Health online course offers students the opportunity to study at home while employing technology as a learning tool, meeting with other students in a virtual classroom, and receiving live instruction from a teacher.

This is a general education course that meets the high school health graduation requirement. Students should expect to spend a consistent amount of time each day (1 hour, on average) on the assigned lessons. Much of the learning is done independently by the student, as the class meets only once per week.

This Health class takes an unbiased, respectful, tolerant and informative approach to all health topics. We utilize online course curriculum which includes modules on nutrition & fitness, first aid & CPR, cultural diversity, empathy, violence prevention, mental health, self-esteem, conflict resolution, stress, depression, suicide, diseases and disorders, drugs/alcohol/tobacco, puberty, personal hygiene, healthy relationships, dating, CHYA (California Healthy Youth Act), sexual health, and decision-making.

Note: To ensure a positive school climate so that all students feel safe on and off campus knowing that all peers have the same basic understanding of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, content includes gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, discrimination, harassment,

bullying, intimidation, relationships, family, and human reproductive organs and their functions California Ed Code (EC § 51932(b).) In general, content in California Education Code Section 51934 may be opted out of, but instructional criteria in California Education Code 51933 may not be.

During the online sessions, an overview is given of the week’s instruction and students engage in activities and discussion. An assessment is completed at the end of each module and submitted to the instructor. These are assessments of the students’ understanding of the material. A final project provides a summative conclusion of the semester’s content.

  • Unexcused Absence is defined as:
An absence that does not accompany a parent email to the instructor at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.

Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident, sudden illness, etc. Students should arrange a "back up plan" in case of unexpected computer problems the day of the class (i.e. make pre-arrangements to go to a neighbor, friend, relative, library, etc.) When students are absent, they must contact the instructor via email or contact another classmate to obtain the class assignment.
