Transcript: Grade 5 Math (1 of 2): Course Introduction

Course Objectives:

  • Explain the value of each digit as Latex: 10 times the value of the digit to its right and one-tenth of the value of the digit to its left, including decimals to the thousandths.
  • Explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point and number of zeros when dealing with powers of Latex: 10\textsf{.}
  • Write whole-number exponents to denote powers of Latex: 10\textsf{.}
  • Compare the efficiency of a method to those expressed by others.
  • Apply models and methods to solve problems.
  • Read and write decimals to the thousandths in standard form, word form, expanded notation, and expanded form.
  • Compose and decompose multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths in multiple ways using the values of the digits in each place.
  • Order, plot and compare two decimals to thousandths.
  • Round multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousands to the nearest hundredth, tenth, or whole number.
  • Estimate to determine possible solutions to mathematical and real-world problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  • Check calculations when solving problems.
  • Calculate whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to five-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.
  • Progress from modeling problems with objects and drawings to using algorithms and equations.
  • Represent multiplication and division of decimals to the hundredths using objects and pictorial models, including area models.
  • Multiply multi-digit numbers with decimals using different strategies.
  • Explain the reasoning used when relating strategies to written methods.
  • Apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace.
  • Divide multi-digit numbers with decimals using different strategies.
  • Add or subtract decimals to hundredths or thousandths using different strategies.
