Course Overview:  This visual arts course will be an introduction and exploration into the realm of visual arts. Using the knowledge of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, students will explore both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art. Students will learn to plan and execute their own projects while developing the skill to talk about their art and their classmates' work.

As this is an 8th grade visual arts course students will be expected to strive for high quality work.  Students will be expected to actively participate in group discussions to contribute to the class learning experience and use class time to complete their art assignments. Most of the time, students will have enough time to finish their work during class time. However, there will be occasions when students must take home their projects and finish then between class meetings.

The California State Content Standards for Visual Arts will be covered using multiple media and learning opportunities. Students are expected to fully engage and participate in mastering of the standards.

Attendance: Attendance is required.  Due to the fact that this class is 1 hour, once a week, class time is valuable. Being tardy to this class means missing out on lectures and instructions. Being absent causes students to lose out on valuable work time provided in class. Students are still expected to complete the assignments whether they are tardy or absent from class.

The Truancy Policy applies to Resource Center courses. An unexcused absence may be counted as a truancy.

  • Excused Absence is defined as:
The parent shall notify the teacher by phone or email of the absence at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.
  • Unexcused Absence is defined as:
An absence that does not accompany a parent phone call or email to the instructor at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.

*If there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow for at least 24 hours, then the teacher must still be notified prior to the start of class; allowances may be made depending on the circumstances. Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident, sudden illness, etc.
When students are absent, they must contact the instructor via email or contact another classmate to obtain the content missed during class and any assignments that must be completed.

Absent/Late Work:  Students have 1 week to catch up on assignments from excused absences. Points can be taken off for later work.

Daily Homework: Most weeks there will not be homework. However, when a student doesn’t finish their work in class, they will need to complete it at home. Please refer to the pacing guide for each week's assignment completed by the following week’s class.

Final Project:  The final project is 15% of the overall grade. Instructions will be given during class.
