Course Overview:

Welcome to Bridge 8 Science

This syllabus is for the 8th grade Physical Science course. We will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00am-11:00pm at the CW Central Valley Learning Center. All students are expected to attend class and to be  keeping up with the weekly assignments. Much of the learning is done independently by the student, as the class meets only twice a week.  Assignments will be posted in Canvas for each day of the week. Expect to spend ~ ½ hour per day on Science outside of class time.

Course Summary:

The instructional segments are organized to show how energy drives change, from simple to complex.  Instructional segment one introduces students to the concept that forces act on objects that cause them to move and collide.  In instructional segment two, the relationship of energy to electrical, magnetic, and wave interactions is explored.  Instructional segment three investigates how matter is affected by thermal energy.  In instructional segment four, how chemical energy and chemical reactions can change the properties of matter is highlighted..

For a detailed outline of what we will be covering, please see the pacing guide.  Note: The most up to date place to look at assignments will always be our class Canvas Homepage.

Daily Homework:

All homework will be submitted through Canvas even though some assignments will also be accessed through Savvas You can submit a Word document, PDF or Google Doc (download as a PDF and upload to Canvas) Do NOT submit HEIC files as they are not readable by Canvas. If you are using an apple device to take pictures of your homework for submission, you need to follow this pathway to AVOID using HEIC photos.

  • Choose Settings
  • Choose Camera
  • Choose Formats
  • Choose Most Compatible (will create a jpeg) .

Test & Quizzes:

The instructor will collect and grade several quizzes and tests throughout the semester.  The tests will be posted in Canvas for the students to complete either on the Savvas platform or the Canvas Class. You should bring your computer to each class session.  Specific instructions for the quizzes and tests will be given in class and in Canvas, including procedures for submission and due dates. Due dates and cut-off dates will be posted for each test on the Canvas assignment page.If you don’t take the quiz or test on the day it is due, the assignment automatically closes.  It is the students responsibility to email the teacher with a request to open _____ quiz or test.  You must name the assignment you want opened in your email.

Emailed assignments will not be accepted unless instructed to by your teacher.  I prefer email communication through my CW email and not through the Canvas inbox.

Grading:

Overall course grade

25% Homework and Classwork

25% Attendance and Participation in online sessions

25% Quizzes

25% Tests and Class Projects

Grading Scale

90% + A

80-89% B

70-79% C

60-69% D

Below 60% F

Students will be graded on attendance and participation in the class sessions, daily homework assignments, occasional check-up assignments or quizzes, class projects, chapter tests, and a semester final exam.

The final grade is assigned by the EE based on the above breakdown.

Attendance: Attendance is required.  The Truancy Policy applies to Canvas courses. An unexcused absence may be counted as a truancy.

  • Excused Absence is defined as:
The parent shall notify the teacher by phone of the absence at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.
  • Unexcused Absence is defined as:
An absence that does not accompany a parent phone call to the instructor at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.

*If there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow for at least 24 hours, then the teacher must still be notified prior to the start of class; allowances may be made depending on the circumstances. Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident,  cheetah sighting, sudden illness, etc.
When students are absent, they must contact the instructor via email or contact another classmate to obtain the homework assignment.

Absent/Late Work:

  • All assignments are to be completed from the missed class sessions.
  • Students are expected to complete work on or ahead of time if on an planned excused absence.
  •  For unplanned excused absences, turn in work as soon as possible AND be in communication with me about it.
  • Unexcused absences receive NO Attendance/Participation credit for that day.
  • Excused absences receive Attendance, but no Participation credit for that day.
  • Late homework will be accepted for one month, and will lose 10% of its point each week it is late.
  • Quizzes and Tests are accepted late and will not lose point value.  Please remember, that turning in work late decreases your successful understanding of the material, mostly because cramming is proven to decrease learning.
  • Make it your goal to turn in each day's work on the day it is due.  Late work makes your Teachers job harder.  Late work stresses your parent and ES more than necessary.  Late work is NOT GOOD FOR YOUR PEACE OF MIND

In Summary, the way to succeed in this class is as follows: come to class, complete your assignments each day and turn them in on time, ask questions, and study for and take quizzes and tests the day they are due.
