CWCS’s 7th Grade History online course offers students the opportunity to study at home while employing technology as a learning tool, meeting with other students in a virtual classroom, and receiving live instruction from a teacher.

Course Overview:  World History and Geography: Medieval and Early Modern Times

The medieval and early modern periods provide students with opportunities to study the rise and fall of empires, the diffusion of religions and languages, and significant movements of people, ideas, and products. During these periods, the regions of the world became more and more interconnected. Although societies were quite distinct from each other, there were more exchanges of people, products, and ideas in each century. Students study content-rich examples and case studies, rather than superficially survey all places, names, and events. Students approach history not only as a body of content (such as events, people, ideas, or historical accounts) to be encountered or mastered, but also as an investigative discipline. They analyze evidence from written and visual primary sources, supplemented by secondary sources, to form historical interpretations. Both in writing and speaking, they cite evidence from textual sources to support their arguments.

Although this framework covers the existing seventh-grade content standards, it reorganizes the units. Each of the new units has investigative questions to guide instruction and concrete examples and case studies for in-depth analysis. The new units are as follows: 1. The World in 300 CE (Interconnections in Afroeurasia and Americas) 2. Rome and Christendom, 300 CE–1200 (Roman Empire, Development and Spread of Christianity, Medieval Europe, and Sicily) 3. Southwestern Asia, 300–1200: Persia and the World of Islam (Persia, Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates, Development and Spread of Islam, Sicily, and Cairo) 4. South Asia, 300–1200 (Gupta Empire, Spread of Hinduism and Buddhism, Srivijaya) 5. East Asia, 300–1300: China and Japan (China during Tang and Song, Spread of Buddhism, Korea and Japan, Quanzhou) 6. The Americas, 300–1490 (Maya, Aztec, Inca) 7. West Africa, 900–1400 (Ghana, Mali) 8. Sites of Encounter in Medieval World, 1150–1490 (Mongols, Majorca, Calicut) 9. Global Convergence, 1450–1750 (Voyages, Columbian Exchange, Trade Networks, Gunpowder Empires; Colonialism in the Americas and Southeast Asia, Atlantic World) 10. The Impact of Ideas, 1500–1750 (The spread of Religions, Reformation, Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment).

Grading:  Students will be graded on attendance and participation, tests and quizzes, writing, and in-class reading comprehension questions.

Overall course grade

20% Attendance/Participation (Attendance or other participation quiz, room checks, headset check)

20% Assignments. These are done in class, or at least started to be finished on student’s time. Late submissions will earn partial credit.

20% Quizzes and Tests

20% ES Progress Report: Textbook homework checked by Parent or ES (Textbook questions or workbook).

20% Final Assessment, Midterm project, and any significant project.

Grading Scale:

E:  Excellent - consistently meets or exceeds expectations of 7th grade social science standards, attends class, completes all assignments and participates in class. (Equivalent to an A.)

S: Satisfactory - meeting expectations of 7th grade social science standards, attends class, completes  assignments, and participates in class. (Equivalent to a B or C.)

N: Needs improvement - unable to or, with prompting and support, progressing towards meeting 7th grade social science standards, poor attendance and/or missing assignments. (Equivalent to a D or F.)

Attendance: Attendance is required.  The Truancy Policy applies to Canvas courses. An unexcused absence may be counted as a truancy.

  • Excused Absence is defined as:
The parent shall notify the teacher of the absence at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.
  • Unexcused Absence is defined as:
An absence that does not accompany a parent phone call to the instructor at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.

*If there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow for at least 24 hours, then the teacher must still be notified prior to the start of class; allowances may be made depending on the circumstances. Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident, sudden illness, etc. Students should arrange a "back up plan" in case of unexpected computer problems the day of the class (i.e. make pre-arrangements to go to a neighbor, friend, relative, library, etc.)

When students are absent, they must contact the instructor via email or contact another classmate to obtain the homework assignment. The recording should be watched within 48 hours, and attendance quiz and class assignment completed.

Absent/Late Work: Please email the instructor through Canvas if you will be absent. Late class assignments, homework, or projects will earn no higher than an 85%. (Ex- An A paper will be a B.) Class assignments, tests, and projects are due by the Friday of that week, unless otherwise stated. Absences don’t extend deadlines.

Homework: Homework is checked by your ES. This is the work done in your textbook or workbook (see pacing guide). All Class assignments (other than bookwork) will be submitted through Canvas and are due Friday by 11:59 PM of the week assigned. You can submit a Word document, PDF or Google Doc (download as a PDF and upload to Canvas).  Emailed assignments will not be accepted.

Please Note: Assignments are subject to change. Students enrolled in Canvas classes should log into the course regularly for up-to-date and detailed assignments. Students who are not enrolled in Canvas classes and who are using the course syllabi can follow the pacing guides’ weekly assignments.

Test & Quizzes:  The tests will be posted in Canvas for the students to access. Specific instructions for the quizzes and tests will be given in class, including procedures for submission and due dates. Most will be open book unless otherwise stated.
