Class Time:  This is an asynchronous class (no class meeting time); however, it is in a weekly format and students must log in each week to complete the assignments by their due dates.


Course Overview:

CW’s High School Intensive English Composition Intensive is an asynchronous, independent study course that focuses on writing with an emphasis on revising and editing essays for development, coherence, style, and correctness. Essay genres include argumentative/persuasive & research/analytical.

Successful completion of this course earns 5 high school English credits. 

Curriculum:  Required curriculum may be available at the Learning Center on a first-come basis.  If needed, ESs can order curriculum using the OPS catalog which will have the most up-to-date pricing. Students will need: 

“Common Core Coach for Composition I” Triumph Learning 1st Edition (Check Atrium)


Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • Approach writing as a process.
  • Read and analyze a variety of academic texts and respond to literature questions using evidence from the text to support your response.
  • Use invention strategies–listing, brainstorming, clustering, mapping, etc. –to develop and organize ideas.
  • Write coherent essays that include a clear thesis statement.
  • Create essays with effective introductions, well-developed body paragraphs, and effective concluding paragraphs.
  • Use clear topic sentences in paragraphs, and use effective transitional expressions to move from one idea to another.
  • Apply the conventions and rules of standard English–grammar, mechanics, and usage–in written assignments.
  • Develop skill-building techniques and apply them in written assignments.

Turnitin & Revision Assistant

Each essay will be written using Turnitin's Revision Assistant (RA).  RA helps you improve your writing by providing instant feedback, called a Signal Check, as you write your response to the prompt.  Then, RA guides you through revising your work and allows you to request as many Signal Checks as you need before you electronically turn your essay in.  As you revise, you'll see highlighted portions of your essay that could be improved and comments on how to make the highlighted portions better.  You are also allowed three (3) opportunities to run a “Proofread” check to correct spelling/grammatical errors. Consider Revision Assistant as your guide to better writing. I 

Attendance: You must log in each week and complete the assigned work. Students not logging in for 2 consecutive weeks, will have their ES and parent notified.  The Truancy Policy applies to Canvas courses. 

*If there are extenuating circumstances in which allowances may be made. Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident, sudden illness, etc.  

Getting Help

Questions about the course, course content, workbook, etc. should be sent to the instructor via Canvas email (located in the left-hand menu). If you try to send an email to the instructor’s email address from an external email address (any email address/account other than your school Gmail account) you run the risk of having it blocked as SPAM email and it will be delayed several days if it arrives at all. It is strongly suggested that you use Canvas to send an email for this course.

Any computer-related questions, issues, or computer problems you experience need to be directed to your ES for assistance or referral.
