Objective: To teach K-2 students how to read by modeling reading instruction to their parents in class.

Overview:   Connecting Waters is excited to offer an exciting new class where parents join their kindergarteners to learn best practices in teaching beginning reading in a safe and collaborative environment. The instructors will model lessons with parents and allow time for parents to work individually with their child on targeted literacy skills.  Classes will include time for parents to ask questions for additional guidance about their child’s specific reading needs. The instructors will model lessons in class and assign lessons for homework.

Adding outcomes to the syllabus per level, but that would be individualized to each Level so that ESs and parents can see what general concepts are covered in each level. Here's an example of what that might look like:

Course Outcomes:  Parents will learn strategies to teach their children how to read and write using strategies focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Students will learn these foundational skills with their parents after instructor modeling. Guided by the Early Literacy Benchmarks, parents will also learn about how to assess their child’s progress and how to support students in developing a strong foundation in early literacy. Parents will receive a certificate at the end of the class.
