Curriculum: Required curriculum may be available at the Learning Center on a first come basis. If needed, ESs can order curriculum using the OPS catalog which will have the most up-to-date pricing. Students will need the following required materials:
Required Materials:
- Novels
- Emily’s Runaway Imagination by Beverly Cleary
- ISBN 9780380709236
- Read aloud on Youtube by Grandma Carla
- The Silence Between Us by Alison Gervais
- ISBN 9780310766162
- Ginger Pye by Eleanor Estes
- ISBN 9780544927810
- All 13: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team by Christina Soontornvat
- ISBN 978-1536209457
- Folder/binder to keep your writing assignments for my class.
- Working external headset with mic (computer speakers do not work successfully with the Canvas setup). Plug-in headsets (rather than Bluetooth) work best with Jigsaw. After the third week of class and no headset, students may begin to lose participation points for the class. Class is much more engaging if all students can talk in class using their mic. Suggested: Office Depot Logitech Clear-Chat
- Optional Amazon Business Material List(See Canvas)
Options for Obtaining Novels:
- Many of these novels are at the Learning Center. Check Atriuum!
- Check out the novel from your local library.
- Amazon has used novels for cheap.
- The PDF of the novel is on my online homepage.
- Purchase the novels with funding.
Please review the CWCS Master Class Syllabus that will be used in the Parent/Student Orientation course.
CWCS’s 6th-8th grade Novel Exploration’s online course offers students the opportunity to study at home while employing technology as a learning tool, meeting with other students in a virtual classroom, and receiving live instruction from a teacher.
Course Overview:
Students will engage in the study of four novels and explore a variety of literary genres throughout time. Each novel will be examined in a variety of fashions and an in depth literature study unit will be completed with each novel. Students should make every effort to keep up with assigned reading, as prior reading of assigned material before coming to class is essential in order to participate fully.
Here are some examples of what we will be working on during the year:
- Literature and informational text Analyzing literature and informational text
- Reading skills and strategies
- Vocabulary skills and strategies
- Language conventions
Students will:
- Generate, identify, and organize details
- Determine main ideas and draw conclusions
- Order and sequence events
- Compare and contrast ideas
- Chart causes and effects
- Evaluate information and make decisions
Classes are held weekly in Canvas which is the course management system that is available to students, parent teachers, and Education Specialists, 24/7. Detailed weekly assignments and announcements will be posted on my Canvas homepage page. In addition, for your reference, a pacing guide containing suggested assignments is included at the end of this syllabus.
PLEASE NOTE: The pacing guide can be subject to change and is a suggested guide for assignments. Students in online classes should read the online homepage for up-to-date and detailed assignments.

- Excused Absence is defined as:
The parent shall notify the teacher by phone of the absence at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets. - Unexcused Absence is defined as:
An absence that does not accompany a parent phone call to the instructor at least 24 hours* prior to the time the class meets.
*If there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow for at least 24 hours, then the teacher must still be notified prior to the start of class; allowances may be made depending on the circumstances. Examples of extenuating circumstances: car accident, sudden illness, etc. Students should arrange a "back up plan" in case of unexpected computer problems the day of the class (i.e. make pre-arrangements to go to a neighbor, friend, relative, library, etc.)

Daily Homework: All homework will be submitted through Canvas. You can submit a Word document, PDF or Google Doc (download as a PDF and upload to Canvas). Emailed assignments will not be accepted. All communication will be made through Canvas’ email feature.

Final Exam & Projects: There is no final exam. Projects are due by the required deadline listed in Canvas.
Safety Disclaimer:
It is recommended that all crafts and activities be supervised by an adult. It is the parent’s responsibility to participate and assist their child with any cooking activities. Adults should always handle any hot items such as glue or cooking supplies. Always take safety precautions when performing arts and crafts. Always follow the labels of ingredients and supplies used. Always use judgement on age-appropriateness and do not let children under 3 participate with any small ingredients of supplies that could pose a choking hazard. It is the parent’s discretion to participate with their child in any of the project based (STEAM) activities.
A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER: Your child will meet with me one day a week. Your child may need some support from you at home with their reading and writing skills. Therefore, please use this pacing guide to help you with planning your instruction. Please make sure your student completes the work and fully understands the material each week. We are a team in your child’s education and your child’s success depends on all members giving 100%.
